Give A Spit Club’s Fundraiser Race!

Welcome to the new year of 2015! This year, I’m really excited to present an awesome opportunity our high school club will be holding: a fundraiser race for Be The Match Foundation! My current school year has been filled with many school and extracurricular activities, and I’ve been too busy to write a new post on my club’s volunteer work. I am personally excited that my individual project from last year (donor drives for cancer patients) has expanded into a club at my high school and I can’t wait for all our plans to happen!

I would like to thank Mrs. Barnych for being a great club advisor. Thanks to her help, we will be able to hold a fundraiser race! Congratulations to our new board members! (This is a bit late now)

Summer Catch Up DRE Events: April, May, June, July, and August

Summer Catch Up DRE Events: Hoof it for Haiti Southbury, Cheshire Half Marathon and 5K, & Marrakech Inc CT Race

Hello everyone! It’s been quite a while since I wrote about the past events Give A Spit was at. This is a summer catch up about three events that I have not written about. I will be heading to camp over the summer and will not be able to help with any GAS drives but I will return as a volunteer during the school year. If anyone is interested to join Give A Spit as a volunteer, please contact me at giveaspit@gmail.com. I would love to have any volunteers with me during the drives. Your help is greatly needed.

April

We attended Hoof it for Haiti in Southbury on April 26th. It was drizzling a bit and arrived just before the race began. Although it wasn’t the most successful donor recruitment event, we were given the best table anyone could have; right in the center where everyone could see the table when they walked in. The spotlight for our organization was amazing and taken for granted, thanks to the amazing race coordinator! From this event, I met the race director who raises money from these races to provide support to families in Haiti, still recovering from the earthquake and/or families who need the money support. I was intrigued by the idea of have photo frames with the pictures from past trips to Haiti, instead of keepsake trophies. This race was very inspirational, and I hope Give A Spit may hold a professional race similar to this to raise awareness and profit to Be The Match organization.

Just arrived.

Just arrived.

The following day was the famed Cheshire’s Half Marathon and 5K. We received a table from Bill, the director, and was able to recruit 16 potential donors! I was super proud of this accomplishment, which holds the current record for most donors collected in one day. (I am still planning on breaking this record.) It was a little chilly and I was not able to broadcast the donor opportunity to many people who could haven been potential donors in the race area. There were at least 1,000 attendees to this event, and I was proud Give A Spit was able to make it to this race. It was great to see so many people out and about, running and smiling while enjoying the day with their family members.

I was sadly not able to attend one other event because it was scheduled at the same time as Hoof it for Haiti.

1. Community Dining Room 11th Walkathon (4/26/2014)

May

There were three events that I missed in May. I was not able to participate in the following three events, but I would love to do so next year.

  1. Orange CT Chamber Cinco de Miler (5/4/2014) SUNDAY
  2. New Haven’s 36th Annual Walk Against Hunger (5/4/2014) SUNDAY visit: http://www.ctfoodbank.org/connecticut-food-bank-news-events/special-events/walk-against-hunger
  3. Hamden Hills Half Marathon & 5K (5/31/2014) SATURDAY

June

There was one event that Give A Spit attended. It was Marrakech’s 5K on June 22nd, 2014. It was two days after my school year ended. It was a beautiful day for running. The race itself was small, an I got an idea of my future fundraiser race would be like. There were about 100 runners at the race, and there was some music and beverages/food for finishers. The atmosphere was local and cheerful and I knew my fundraiser would be pretty similar to this. My mom was not with me the whole time, so I got to man the table. I informed several people there about my efforts in this project and many encouraged me and were happy I was supporting cancer patients. I even met a brother of a cancer survivor, because of Be The Match! I talked to him, and his story was very inspirational. Be The Match has helped his brother live, and he was very supportive to what I’m doing today. This is another reason why I love holding these drives; not just because of the accomplishment of finding potential bone marrow donors, but also I meet these amazing people who have experienced with Be The Match in some way-and the stories are very touching. Although I didn’t collect many forms and swab kits, it was a very inspirational day for me and I got a lot of good out of it.

Marrakech Race

Marrakech Race

July

There was one race that I managed to get accepted to particpate at. It was located at Milford called the Neon Nightrun which was to benefit the literacy center in Milford. I was truly excited to participate, but was not prepared and came empty handed (no table!). Also the event was planned to start around 8:15pm, meaning by the time the race finishes, it should be around 9pm. I do not have lighting equipment, so I decided GAS won’t be able to make it. Maybe next year?

August

I did not attend the North Branford Potato and Corn Festival, although I would love to have been there. I had personal matters to attend to and GAS was not able to make it to the Fest. I would definitely look into it next year.

I’m very happy to say I got to volunteer at TWO places in TWO days!
What I haven’t thought about was being at blood drives…I’m so glad I did though! I managed to get almost 20 donors from the two events, so I’m pretty proud.
Julia’s Run wasn’t publicized as much, but without my mom there, I didn’t recruit as many saliva donors for Be The Match, and also didn’t capture any pictures. It was a beautiful morning though-and the race event was on Yale campus. The director was pleased to have me there even though she didn’t reply back to me if I could attend the day before.
(So to every race I’ve been to, I’ve been collecting T Shirts, and wish I had asked for this race…whoops)
The next day was the blood drive sponsored by Marrakech. It was very last minute but I managed and was approved at 12 pm with the drive at 1pm!
It was a good 5 hours there, with little to nothing much to do, only because there were maybe 23 blood donors in that time span. But remember that I can only get saliva donors from ages 18-44 at least, so that narrowed down my potential donors to 10…Most blood donors were old let’s say.
And you wonder why at blood drives? Because if the saliva donors are matched to a cancer patient, they will be asked for a blood donation, and if further matched, will be asked to donate marrow through blood stem cells PBSC or liquid bone marrow surgery.

*Very upset I didn’t take any pictures of the events I went to…*

Great event; very crowded place to be at! There were two shifts of runners-the 5K and the Half Marathon!
Again, there were minor problems and forgot the forms in which my lifesaver mom had to get for me, and recieved a good amount of donors..Thanks everyone who attended the race!
It was a beautiful day to be running and giving a spit!

What a great event! Everyone (nearly everyone) had some shade of green on.
The “festival” as shown in picture was behind the firehouse and away from the crowds at the beginning. After the race, people began to drop by for their sandwiches and drinks.

Give A Spit collected a whopping 12 donors. (Whoohooo!) Although 12 did not meet my expectations, I had a great experience.

Notes:
It was a windy day. Papers and things were flying all over the parking lot.

If you would like to volunteer with Give A Spit, we have events listed under the tab Event.
Success depends on you-volunteers! Email giveaspit@gmail.com to be one.

February 2nd: DRE at Run For Refugees 5K in New Haven CT

*If you would like to volunteer for this event, contact giveaspit@gmail.com. Volunteer hours given-it’s the volunteers that also help make this event a success*

Just in! On February 2nd, we’ll hold the first DRE in New Haven, CT. Also Super Bowl Sunday, so before watching the games, come to this event to run and spit! It’ll be our first donor event for Give A Spit!

The 5K will be raising money for refugees in CT, through the IRIS, which helps refugees and displaced people establish new lives in CT. Again, look at how much you will be helping your community! Part of your race entry will help the refugees, and your swabbed spit will help doctors find a potential match for leukemia and cancer patients.

It will be held in New Haven’s Wilbur Cross High School (181 Mitchell Ave.) & East Rock Park.

At the Run for Refugees 5K , we hope to recruit many generous donors. All it takes though is your spit! Donors have to be 18-44 preferably, as medical research concludes the younger the donor the better, (45-60 is alright, but has a 10% demand, and you must register online plus pay $100 to cover the costs). You’ll have to fill out a health form with a driver’s license or passport. Then, you’ll be added to the registry! If you are selected as a potential match for the cancer patients, you’ll be contacted and asked to donate blood cells, which will save the patients’ lives.

Hope all of you make it!

*Please remember to bring your license or passport when filling out the health forms.*

Spit Donor Recruitment at the 5th Annual Jamie’s 5K Event

Any volunteers that would like to help out with Give A Spit can contact giveaspit@gmail.com for this event. *Volunteer Info listed under Donate/Volunteer Tab*

Jamie's Run

The recruiting events program is working very well, as just recently, Kurt Knotts, president of Jamie’s Run gave the okay to have a spot at their 5K event.

The goals of Jamie’s Run as taken from their site:

Our goal in 2014 is to continue towards raising money for the clinical trials program, child life in hematology/oncology, and the family assistance fund.  100% of the proceeds from The JK 5K will be donated to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

Give A Spit is a perfect match for this event. Jamie’s Run and Give A Spit are both trying to raise awareness on cancer.

WHY JAMIES RUN.png

The 2014 Jamie’s Run will be held on Sunday, November 2nd at: (and not a typo, the above image was from 2013)

Standish Park – Old Wethersfield, Connecticut 06109

Hope to see you there! I’ll remind you about this event when we’re a month away.

Please stop by the Give A Spit table and donate your spit. By participating in this event, you are doing two great things at a time; running for cancer patients and your donated spit will help save a life of a cancer patient. *Please remember to bring your license or passport when filling out the health forms.*

P.S. Snow has stopped, sadly.

4th Annual Savin Rock Half Marathon & 5K (DRE-Donor Recruitment Event)

*If you would like to volunteer for this event, contact giveaspit@gmail.com. Volunteer hours given!

Background: Give A Spit is an organization that recruits spit donors to help people diagnosed with leukemia and other cancer. Leukemia, which is a cancer of the blood, kills more children each year than any other disease. Leukemia patients have to receive a bone marrow transplant to cure the disease, but the challenge presented is patients need to find a bone marrow match. Give A Spit was created to continue DoSomething.com‘s campaign, Give A Spit About Cancer. We intend to team up with the national bone marrow registry Be The Match (bethematch.org) to spread awareness and swab the donors’ cheeks. Our goal is to encourage people ages 18-24 (the age of the most-in-need donors) to sign up with the bone marrow registry.

At the Savin Rock Half Marathon and 5K, I hope to recruit many generous donors. All it takes though is your spit! I’m not kidding! Yes, spit! Donors have to be 18-44 preferably, as medical research concludes the younger the donor the better, (45-60 is alright, but has a 10% demand, and you must register online and pay a $100 fee). You’ll have to fill out a health form with a driver’s license or passport. Then, you’ll be added to the registry! If you are selected as a potential match for the cancer patients, you’ll be contacted and asked to donate blood cells, which will save the patients’ lives.

*Please remember to bring your license or passport when filling out the health forms.*

So bring your family and bring yourself! Have fun during the race and donate your spit to save lives. Hope to see all of you there!
